In the early 50's I lived in a place called Aliceville on the Portmoody / Burnaby boundary, beside the BA oil depot. Our home property was purchased by BA in 1957 for future expansion. Your history brings back memories.

Were you able to highlight the years when Gulf Canada then became Petro-Canada? as then the Trudeau administration was getting tired of the kickback that Gulf was doing to aquire Japanese and Canadian mini oil companies to the point that the government in Ottawa had enough... Gulf went bankrupt by the start of the Mulroney 80's and a new company went into form...PETRO-CANADA INC!

Brings back memories - B/A used to be everywhere - my dad bought his gas at the station in Marysville, Ontario. As a kid I used to count the gas stations on a trip and B/A was usually the winner. I can remember the change to the brighter Gulf colours and then finally a Gulf sign back in 1967 or 68, gone was the green B/A edging (very sad). This is a wonderful tribute site and an excellent footnote to Canadian Petroleum History.

I am presently on a work assignment on Guadacanal. A local person showed me a clock given to him by his father in 1942. His father rescued the ship's Captain of the USS Astoria and was given the clock off the deck. The clock is brass and says US Navy clock made by Seth Roth. The man is considering selling it. Do you have any ideas how he can do this and the approximate value of the clock?

You know what'd impress me? If Petro-Canada went "back to the future" and reinstated the B/A name--logo, livery and all. (A move not without precedent; after all, the States have seen the return of long-lost names like Sinclair, Pure, etc.)

What a marvellous and detailed site! Certainly evokes memories of the "good old days" when you fill up for less than $10.00 and when a quart of oil and a gallon of gas were just that and not a hyper-expensive metric unit. The enormous illuminated BA sign on Toronto's Lakeshore Drive greeting every motorist entering the city and the friendly face of Mr.BA are memories that have been rekindled thanks to this site. Good on you Alex for a super job.

Having spent 38 years with B-A etc., starting 1951, I was pleased and surprised to find your wweb site, most of which, I havepersonal knowledge. Even your very first page brought back memories as I could pick outthe old building at the old Lakeshore site that had become known as Toronto Branch where I first began. Alan McKinney of Petro-Canada, with their support, is doing a great job of gathering memorabilia from all the predecessor companies. While it is likely you already know of him, his Email address is pmckinney1@coge4co.ca he'd love to hear from you. Also their is a complete B-A station from the 1950's with extensive memorobilia,(some even goes back before my time), located in the hamlet of Newtonville, just north of Hwy. #2 and East of the 115. Very nice web page. Very informative. My late father worked for BA from 1947 to 1973 as industrial rep in the Toronto - St. Catharines area. Hello: Just ran across your website. My Dad was a supervisor at the Clarkson refinery for over 40 years. He even went to the republic of China for them in middle 70's. We lived in homes provided by BA on Marigold Cresent. Anyone who remembers this location (Clarkson road south) will remember it's residence. Everyone knew everyone. Known as the BA families. BA also built an outside skating rink with boards and lights. Even had a shelter shack there as well, with a wood burning stove inside to keep warm. Everone was welcomed on this rink. Was built near the refinery at the base of Clarkson road south. We would organize hockey games and then a day/night for pleasure. Great memories, great people. Even helped flood the rink in preparing it for skating season. Now I am writing a book on the BA families and those wonderful years living on Marigold Cresenr. If anyone out there would like to contribute to this book, you are all welcomed. I'm hoping someone has an old picture of the rink or someone is an artist who can draw this rink (with shack an all) When I was a teenager I even worked at the 'Ray Whites' BA Service Station on Lakeshore Road in Clarkson (after work). Well that's all for now. So, if anyone would like to assist me with the book please reply best regards, and great work on your website. Hi, As a map cataloger at UW-Milwaukee's American Geographical Society Library, I often am required to trace the names of older oil companies in order to find out what they have become today. Alex, small world huh? Just killing time I checked "Walsh, Ontario" on Google and there you are. I'm not sure if you remember me since I was a little kid in Walsh when you were already a teenager. When a susbequent owner was retiring your Dad's old store for demolition and road straightening in 1961, my Dad bought me that old roll-top desk from the back office as a study desk. We still have it proudly sitting in our living room! Dad paid $10 for in in 1961; I paid $600 to have it restored 30 years later. Say hello if you care to. And never underestimate how small the world has become!

Alex, Great Site!. My father, Glen Worden, worked for both BA and Gulf Oil for over 25 years.Your site brought back many memories for me when I was a young boy in Cranbrook where my father worked out of the refinery as a B.T.A. Area Sales Rep in the Kootneys in the early 1960's(1963-1970). My father passed away in August of 2000 and he never realy said much about those years to me. I just came across this site after I queried about BA and if there were anything out there that I could buy and add to my new collection of Canadian Petroliana with little success. I loved the site, but there was a little something missing. What happened after Gulf's acquisition of British American was not very pretty. Troubles and a difference of opinion with home office plagued Gulf Canada during the 70's as a result Gulf Canada had to turn to the Ottawa Government for help. The result being the Canadian government buying Gulf/Sumitomo (when Gulf Canada acquired Sumitomo Oil of Canada) in 1975. Rather than have a millstone around their neck they created a new Canadian oil company out of the ashes of Gulf Canada. That company is PETRO-CANADA. So the memories of BA and it's spirit lives on... I'm hoping to get ahold of some Canadian Matchbox BA trucks to add to my growing collection of BA stuff, as well as my 1/25th Scale BA petrol station that I'm building, one of two. Any help would be appreciated.

The photo was planned without consulting me and the flames in the shape of the Maple Leaf did not appear on the negative, so we had to retouch the flames in by hand, it looks like it too!

HI ALEX. YOU HAVE A VERY IMPRESSIVE AND INFORMATIVE SITE. I HAVE A SMALL B/A COLLECTION (COMPARED TO YOURS) MYSELF, THAT I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS NOW, AND HAVE SOME NEAT STUFF. YOUR SITE HAS HELPED ME IN THE HISTORY OF B/A AND THE KNOWLEDGE OF ALL THE PRODUCTS IT OFFERED. WHAT GOT ME INTERESTED WAS THAT MY DAD WAS A BIG B/A USER ON OUR FARM, AND OUR COUSIN HAD A B/A STATION IN MY HOME TOWN, AND A FAMILY FRIEND HAD THE BULK STATION AS WELL, SO I GUESS THERE IS A LITTLE HISTORY THERE. AGAIN ALEX, YOU HAVE A GREAT SITE, AND I HOPE TO TALK TO YOU SOMEDAY. SINCERELY, KEN BIRD.

There's something absolutely fascinating about following the history of a company from its beginning to its end. We had several oil companies here in Southern California which were a big part of my growing up which don't exist anymore (Wilshire, Douglas, Flying A, Signal, Mohawk, Jimmy's, and many more). Thank you for bringing my attention to British/American. I remember, before we had Gulf stations (they left here about ten years later), some TV shows were sponsored by Gulf and there was the reminder ("When in Canada, visit British/American service stations." This was great. Bill

I was most interested to read the history of BA Oil. My great-grandfather was Silas Richard Parson, and I have decided to see what info I could find about him on the internet.

I farm and collect anything IH or McCormick, White Rose Oil, and White Seal Beer. My family were White Rose Farm Bulk dealers in the 50 + 60's and I remember the pumps, barrel, signs and memorabilia, and am trying to collect some as I go. Nice site and history of B/A. You must have been collecting for awhile. Bye.

Great work! I see Dale has popped into your collection again. Talk to you soon. I won't be able to make it to the meeting on the 10th. I'll be babysitting for a bit. Have a great day and say "Hello!" to everyone. And by the way, THANKS AGAIN for the help with Mom's phone. She is just thrilled with that old phone. Couldn't wait to get rid of the new one! Alex, I tried to get on your site after seeing you that day but couldn't. That was because I left out the oil at the end. Maybe I didn't hear you correctly, or maybe I just forgot, what with my age and all. Anyway, I have it now and will be checking in on occasion. See you soon, Dave.

Alex; I enjoyed your site and appreciate the emphasis you placed on the can that my Dad gave you. I struggle to finish this as I imagine the pleasure he would have gotten to view it himself. He would have been very proud of your accomplishment and how it enhances the hobby through infomation, education and preservation. I know he always valued your friendship and enthusiasm. Best wishes.
